Algebra 1 B: Chapter 8--Modeling Linear Data with Lines of Best-Fit and Regression

The work we do in class is loosely based on the material our book covers in chapter 8. We will go much more in-depth and have a lot more fun than your book does. We are going to throw in a couple of ideas from chapter 14. Don't worry, you'll do great!

Note: Because we are not following the section numbers in your book, I'm using an a-b-c system for day 1-day 2-day 3. When our work corresponds directly to the book, I'll go back to the traditional numbering method: 8-1, 8-2, etc.

Week of 09-26-2016
Monday we went over questions from the previous two assignments. No new practice work.
8a Buying a car: regular or hybrid? (in-class discussions and work)
Practice: (Done on the same page as the notes)
Finish Equations and find the number of years it takes for the cars to be the same price.
8b Bungee Apparatus (in-class experiment)
If you miss class on an experiment day, be sure to get the data from your table partner.

8e Racing Day in-class experiment (2 days)
If you miss class on an experiment day, be sure to get the data from your table partner.

    Practice:
    Day 1:
        i) Graph your data,
ii) create an equation from your data, and
iii) be ready to race tomorrow!
    Day 2:
        Racing Day.
Start distribution of Gender Gap data into calculators if there is time.

Week of 10-10-2016
8f Gender Gap (3 days)
Day 1: Finish Task I (I will check this practice work tomorrow in class)

Day 2: Finish Task II (I will check this practice work tomorrow in class)

Day 3: Finish Task III (I will check this practice work tomorrow in class)
For Gender Gap Task II, you need to create a regression line for the data. If you find yourself at home without a graphing calculator, you can still create a regression line on DESMOS! Here's a quick little tutorial: Desmos regression equation tutorial.

Data for the Gender Gap median incomes (Tasks I and II) can be found on DESMOS at this link. The data for cents on the dollar (Task III) can be found at this link.

8g Barbie Bungee Jump
   Day1: Gathering Data
If you miss class on an experiment day, be sure to get the data from your table partner.
If you can't get in touch with your partner, I have some of the groups' data here. You need to do the practice work like the rest of class.
    Practice:
i. Gather Data,
ii. create a graph,
iii. create an equation for a prediction line
(either line of best fit or regression line)

iv. make a prediction for how many rubber bands you will need.
Height from the pavement to the roof of the gym (including the launch pad): 190.5 in or 483.9 cm, which is just shy of 16 ft.

8 Review - Practice Test
You will be required to calculate a regression line on both the practice test and the in-class test. You will need to know how to do this on a graphing calculator!

If you find yourself at home without a graphing calculator, you can still create a regression line on DESMOS! Here's a quick little tutorial: Desmos regression equation tutorial.
